Hero mauled to death by two dogs metres from primary school was protecting his mother
Police say he was attacked by the animals on Thursday afternoon and rushed to hospital as it emerged he had been protecting his mum.
A man died after a dog attack in Stonnall, Staffordshire, just metres from a primary school as he was trying to protect his mum.
He has been named as Ian Price from Stonnall, Staffordshire.
Police said he had been bitten by two dogs on Thursday afternoon.
St Peter's Primary Academy had been placed on lockdown, with children prevented from leaving "for safety reasons".
Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were scrambled - but it has now been confirmed that Mr Price died from his injuries.
Aston Villa fan Mr Price, 52, was attacked by the frenzied animals yards from his family home.
It's understood Mr Price was trying to protect his elderly mum from the beasts after they leapt out of a neighbours window.
He had been visiting his mum, who lives opposite, when the dogs escaped.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "Upon arrival we found a man who had sustained multiple life-threatening injuries and was in a critical condition.
"Ambulance staff administered advanced life support and advanced trauma care to him at the scene.
"Treatment continued en route to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he was conveyed by land ambulance for further treatment.
"Unfortunately, after arrival at hospital, despite the best efforts it became clear that nothing more could be done to save him he was confirmed deceased."
The married dad-of-two was savaged to death by two out-of-control XL Bully beasts in a ferocious 20-minute attack that ripped all his clothing from his body.
Mr Price, who ran his own domestic restoration business, was attempting to “shoo away” the super-powerful hounds after they burst into the pensioner’s front garden after escaping from a neighbouring house.
Passers-by desperately tried to free the dogs jaws from Mr Price, ramming them with wheelie bins and hitting them with sticks, as armed police raced to the scene.
But tragically by the time he was freed he had sustained catastrophic bite injuries and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after being found by paramedics lying in a pool of blood in just his shredded boxer shorts.
Despite medics frantic efforts he could not be revived and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital.
His grief-stricken wife Heather is a teaching assistant at a nearby primary school, where children were locked down for three hours until police declared it safe for them to leave.
It is understood a colleague broke the devastating news her husband had been involved.
Earlier this year they celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary and they have two children – son Russell, 20, who is just about to start his second year at Swansea University and daughter Fiona, 17.
One local said: “The poor woman would have been told she could not leave work because of this attack, but would have been totally unaware that it was her husband who was being set upon.”
A 30-year-old man from the Lichfield area has been arrested on suspicion of having dogs dangerously out of control.
His death came a day before Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced that the breed implicated in the incident would be banned before the end of the year - and a day after a 10-year-old boy was mauled in the street by an out-of-control animal as he played football in the street.
In a video announcement posted to his X - formerly Twitter - account on Friday, Mr Sunak said the breed would be banned following a "pattern of behaviour" that he said "cannot go on".
