A British mum who thought she had heatstroke has been left fighting for her life in Turkey after collapsing at an airport.

Melissa Kinsella, known as Missy by loved ones, was nearing the end of a holiday with her partner, Jay Smith, his family and three children, Chloe, nine, Beau, four, and Romi, two, when she began to feel unwell.

The 30-year-old, from Moreton, Merseyside, was due to fly home on Monday, May 15, but collapsed at the airport after suddenly suffering a seizure, causing her heart to stop.

The mother-of-three was rushed to hospital in Turkey where doctors told her family she had swelling on her brain and heart. Full-time hairdresser Melissa is now in a coma in an intensive care ward, and has been left unable to breathe for herself.

Melissa, who had no other underlying health issues, had complained on social media the day before she collapsed that she thought she may be suffering from heatstroke.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, close friend Rebecca Dath said: "She was vomiting, felt unwell — and that was the day before. When she got to the airport, she had a seizure and collapsed. That's been it since, she has been in intensive care on life support in Turkey."

Doctors told the family they would have to wait until the swelling on her brain reduced before any procedures could be carried out.

Rebecca added: "Doctors don't know what has caused it, but she has swelling on the brain and swelling on her heart. Missy's mum and dad were holidaying in Turkey in another area with Missy's auntie and uncles and partner. Jay rang her auntie because her heart stopped, and her children were there."

Costs have also been mounting for the hospital treatment, as the family were unable to find out if she had medical travel insurance due to her being in a coma.

The hospital is charging £1,800 a day for treatment, and the family have also been told an air ambulance to bring Melissa home would cost around £42,000.

Rebecca has now set up a GoFundMe page to help meet the costs, where she describes her friend as "very, very popular" and "well loved". By last night (Wednesday) the amount raised reached £26,000 out of a £45,000 target.
