David Grout, 22, suffered severe head injuries when he was beaten unconscious in an unprovoked clash outside a club in the Eston area of Middlesbrough last Tuesday.

He leaves behind wife Kerry and their 20-month-old son Harley.

David, a member of the Royal Signals, was attacked when he went out with his mother and stepdad for a drink to celebrate his return after two months in Helmand province.

Soon after the attack, a close family member said: “He made it through a war zone unscathed to come back and be put in hospital by scumbags.”

A 19-year-old man arrested after the incident was freed on police bail pending inquiries.
