Double murder probe after bodies of man and woman found in flat

"I've young kids, it's concerning."

Thornaby: Police on the scene of ongoing murder probe

A double murder investigation is underway after the bodies of a man and a woman were found in a flat yesterday.

Police descended on an address in Stockton-on-Tees, North Yorkshire after reports of an "ongoing incident" at flats, which were previously a pub.

Cleveland Police has now confirmed a murder investigation has now started, and a 21-year-old man has been arrested. He remains in police custody, Teesside Live reports.

Officers are continuing to work to identify the victims.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Peter Carr, said: "A man and woman have sadly died and a man remains in police custody in connection with the incident.

"I would like to appeal to anyone who may have been passing the flats on Thornaby Road, which were formerly known as The Royal George Pub, between 10am and 11am on Wednesday 21st December. If anyone was passing and saw anyone acting suspiciously or any suspicious activity, please contact us."

Teesside Live spoke to residents at the scene on Wednesday who said the police presence was concerning. One neighbour said: "It all happened around 3.30pm, all the police appeared.

"It’s obviously something going on in the flats, the police have been going in and out. I’ve asked them what’s happened but they won’t say. I’ve young kids, it’s concerning."

Teesside Live returned to the scene on Thursday morning and can confirm police are still in attendance. Two police vans remain at the scene and forensic officers have re-entered the property.

New pictures from Thornaby Road show the area remains cordoned off.
