Traffic warden tyranny over! Public given power over yellow lines
THE tyranny of traffic wardens could soon be over after the Government announced plans to give local people the right to decide where double yellow lines should go.
The Department for Communities and Local Government today promises to introduce a system where a petition from 50 residents would require councils to reassess the suitability of double yellow lines and parking charges in their streets. The Government believes the measures will help tackle counter-productive parking restrictions.

Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles said: “Town centres need to allow for proper traffic flow but incessant yellow lines, CCTV spy cars and trigger-happy parking wardens make life unbearable for drivers looking for somewhere to park when shopping.”
Research for the RAC Foundation discovered that in 2012-13 local authorities in England made a profit of £594million from parking.
However, the new policy is issued only as “guidance”.
The DCLG said the Government was ready to consider the case for legislation “if needed”.
