Boy died as 3 doctors missed meningitis
A TERRIFIED 10-year-old boy died in agony after being sent home and told to take Calpol by three doctors who repeatedly missed his meningitis.
Writhing in pain, drifting in and out of consciousness, and screaming from fever, frightened William Cressey begged one doctor: “Please help me – if you don’t help me I’m going to die.”
Yet the desperate youngster was twice refused a blood test and antibiotics which could have helped – and eventually suffered a massive seizure and died.Yesterday his mother, Cheryl Cressey, sobbed as she told an inquest how she was forced to watch his suffering as doctors and nurses refused to admit he had meningitis.
The statistician told an inquest: “I see it every day and every night of my life.” She said that when she begged for help, nurses at Darlington Memorial Hospital “just rolled their eyes at me and turned their backs”.
The hearing at Newcastle upon Tyne continues. It is expected to last three days.
