Hero leaps in as driver of bus collapses
A HERO bus passenger took control of a double-decker when its elderly driver collapsed at the wheel.
Fitness instructor Alex Jenkins, 30, jumped from his seat and grabbed the steering wheel to narrowly avoid people at a bus stop.
The bus had careered out of control after the driver, 73, slumped in his seat when his No 263 collided with a 4x4 in Manchester.
Alex said: “I was reading a book when all of a sudden there was a bang. I couldn’t open the cab or see the keys, so I grabbed the wheel.”
The bus came to a halt after mounting the kerb, hitting a bin, two signposts and then a parking meter.
Bus company Arriva said: “Alex’s quick-thinking and actions are greatly appreciated.” A spokeswoman confirmed the driver’s age, adding: “We are happy to employ drivers past retirement age who have to pass a comprehensive medical.”
