Swansea bus crash: Man arrested after 7 hurt in collision with bridge
A MAN has been arrested after seven people were hurt when a bus crashed into a railway bridge.
The 63-year-old was taken into custody following the incident yesterday morning.
One person suffered life-threatening injuries and another was seriously hurt when the double-decker bus smashed into the bridge around 9.40am.
At the time of the crash, the vehicle had been travelling from Swansea University’s Singleton Park campus to its site in Swansea Bay.
It had been diverted from its usual five-mile route because of roadworks.
Tom Evans, who works nearby, told how it looked like “a tin opener had taken the top of the bus off”.
He said he believed the driver had misjudged the height of a railway bridge – and just driven straight under it.
Around 20 of the passengers were led off to be treated in the nearby Landore Social Club.
Secretary Terry Edkins said: “They are OK, just a little bit shaken up.
“It’s never happened before. There’s never been a double-decker coming down there.”
Bus company First Cymru last night said a full investigation into the crash had been launched.
Andrew Sherrington, the company’s managing director, said: “We can confirm one of our vehicles operating service 10 has been involved in a collision with a bridge, which has resulted in a number of passengers sustaining injuries.
“We’ve immediately dispatched a support team and launched a full investigation to establish the circumstances that have led to this collision, and are assisting South Wales police with their enquiries.
“Everyone at First Cymru is shocked by this incident. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to those injured.”
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that crews had attended the scene, alongside the Welsh Ambulance Service.
Last night the road remained closed to traffic while recovery work took place.
