A48 traffic: Five-car-pile-up causes chaos for drivers with 90 minute delays
A FIVE-CAR-PILE-UP on the A48 has caused delays of up to 90 minutes for drivers in the Cardiff area.

The rush-hour crash, which also affected the M4, happened on the westbound carriageway new Llanedeyrn, less than four miles from Cardiff city centre. Heavy rain exacerbated the situation and traffic was “gridlocked” on parts of the highway. According to Nation Radio Wales one lane of the A48 Eastern Avenue westbound was blocked from Pentwyn to Llanedeyrn Interchange, stretching over a mile long.
Tailbacks extended as far back as junction 26 of the M4 near Malpas Road.
Busses using the A48, one of the busiest roads in Cardiff, were hit with significant delays.
Newport Bus said: “We are experiencing delays on our X30 service due to gridlocked traffic on the A48 to junction 29.
“This is also starting to affect the 30 service with traffic building increasingly around St Mellons.”
Police urged motorists to avoid the area.
South Wales Police roads unit said: “We are currently dealing with a 5 vehicle RTC A48 Llanedeyrn towards Cardiff.

“Expect delays until the vehicles are recovered.”
Shortly before 9am the lane of the A48 which had been closed was reopened.
But drivers have been warned to prepare for setbacks of up to one hour and 40 minutes.

All vehicles involved in the crash have been removed from the scene.
Officers said no injuries were reported.
Rain and snow made driving conditions in the area difficult this morning.
One commuter said it was the fourth day in a row for delays to hit the are.
She wrote on Twitter: “After making it out of St Mellons by avoiding A48 we are now gridlocked at Western Avenue before Tesco.
“Day four of mental traffic.”
The M4 in Berkshire was also hit by delays due to another crash.
Drivers faced delays of up to 45 minutes after a lorry, van and two cars collided.
The smash caused congestion for up to five miles.
