Sikh WPC wins race claim
A SIKH policewoman is expected to win a five-figure payout after an employment tribunal ruled she suffered racist and religious humiliation.
Amandeep Kaur Grewal claimed she was singled out for unfair criticism and treatment because of her race by trainer PC Lucinda Rigby.
When Mrs Grewal complained, she was told by PC Rigby that other students were laughing at her behind her back. Mother-of-two Mrs Grewal, 38, said some of her fellow recruits at the Metropolitan Police College in Hendon, north London, treated her in a “less-than friendly fashion”.
The tribunal in Reading rejected the Met’s claim that trainers had considered Mrs Grewal’s skills to be poor compared with other students.
The panel ruled that Mrs Grewal, now a policewoman in Kingston, south-west London, had been unfairly targeted. It found the Met guilty of race and religious discrimination.
Compensation will be decided later.
