Latch-key children turning to cooking
MORE parents taking second jobs to make ends meet has sparked a new generation of latch-key kids who can cook, a study revealed yesterday.
Researchers found one in five 11-year-olds now carries a door key to let themselves in the house while their mother is still out at work.
The trend has also sparked a huge surge in the number of young children able to make basic meals for themselves.
“Latch-key kids” was a phrase first used in 1944 to describe children being left home alone when one parent joined the Forces and the other took a job.
British Lion eggs conducted the new survey for the final of their Eggs Factor children’s cooking competition.
Yesterday a spokesman said: “Children have discovered cooking simple dishes isn’t difficult.”
