York bomb alert: Evacuation at army recruitment centre in Micklegate - bomb squad called
AN ARMY recruitment centre in York, along with nearby buildings, was evacuated after the discovery of a suspect package this afternoon. The incident was later stood down.

A bomb squad arrived at the scene in Micklegate with nearby workers and residents evacuated. A cordon was erected while explosives experts investigated. It comes after a wave of bomb scares across the UK after a group referring to itself as ‘IRA’ sent out a number of parcel bombs.
North Yorkshire Police said: “There is currently a cordon in place in the Micklegate area of York at the request of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) after a suspicious item was received at a property on the road.
“There is currently a cordon in place in the Micklegate area of York at the request of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) after a suspicious item was received at a property on the road.
“Members of the public are advised to avoid the area while an investigation into the package is carried out.”
They later stood down the incident.
The force said: "A cordon was put in place along Micklegate, York this afternoon at the request of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) after an item, believed to be suspicious was received at a property on the road.
"The cordon was lifted just before 2pm on Friday, 22 March."
