Escaping the blitz
IN the first dark days of the Second World War nearly 3,000,000 Britons were evacuated from their homes to escape the threat of enemy bombing.
Most were children, many in tears after being separated from their parents for the first time in their short lives.
With luggage labels pinned to their clothing to identify them, the children were shipped out of the big cities and into the countryside to escape the threatened Nazi blitz.
This September marks the 70th anniversary of the evacuation, the biggest concentrated movement of people in British history.
