The hitmaker's rep has denied that she was texting during the sold-out show, after its author and composer tweeted fans in anger.

Lin-Manuel Miranda referenced an unnamed famous face who was sat in the audience and who was constantly on their mobile phone.

She wrote: "Tonight was the first time I asked stage management NOT to allow a celebrity (who was texting all through Act 2) backstage #noselfieforyou," the post read.

Despite the message later being deleted, a source told US magazine People that it was the 56-year-old that had been texting throughout the acclaimed play.

They said: "It was definitely her. She was texting, I believe, although at one point she also pulled out a Blackberry. She was also 20 minutes late and caused quite a stir getting to her seat."

Eventually, the Like A Virgin singer put her phone away after someone in the audience "finally hissed 'Shut it off!'", the source added.

However a spokesman for Madonna claimed she had been invited backstage and had only been on her phone after it had finished.

"It's not true. She was invited backstage four different times," Liz Rosenberg told Us Weekly.

"She texted post show when they were doing their fundraising pitch. Madonna had already made a generous donation."

This isn't the first time news has emerged surrounding Madonna and the use of her phone in inappropriate places.

Two years ago, film critic Charles Taylor called her out, saying she had been texting during a screening of 12 Years a Slave at the New York Film Festival.

Express.co.uk has contacted Madonna's spokesperson following these reports.
