Listeners bombarded John Suchet's Classic FM programme asking if he had a cold because his voice sounded different.

But the secret was only revealed when the 71-year-old interrupted his actor sibling to take over as normal.

The 68-year-old did give listeners some clues however and even played the theme to his long-running ITV drama Poirot before coming clean.

He said: "This crime has pushed the little grey cells of mine to the extreme - and yet from the start, I knew this was a crime that I was certainly not going to get away with.

"It is I, Hercule Poirot, aka your bother David Suchet, who has been trying to pass myself off as you this morning."

David later added: "I've absolutely loved it. I've had the time of my life, but I think one Suchet on Classic FM is quite enough."

Meanwhile the TV legend is set to start rehearsals on the London production of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest immediately after Easter.

The star, who will portray Lady Bracknell, spoke to the Ashbourne News Telegraph this week about playing a female part.

He said: "I will have to wear a corset, otherwise I may find myself doing this… [slumping in his chair with his legs apart].

"And that would be unacceptable on every level, especially for the stalls."

John presents his weekday morning show from 10am to 1pm.
