Chris Evans has labelled Top Gear rumours 'nonsense'

It was confirmed this week that Jeremy Clarkson's contract will not be renewed after an "unprovoked physical attack" on a Top Gear producer.

However, despite rumours suggesting that BBC Radio 2 presenter Chris Evans would be replacing Clarkson, this has now been denied, with Evans labelling the rumours as "nonsense".

"This is not true," he told listeners today. "Not only is it not true, it's absolute nonsense.

"From what I've seen on Twitter and various social media, there's a 50/50 split approximately as to whether me being involved in the show is a good idea."

He continued: "In TV or radio, if you get a 50/50 love/hate reaction that usually equals massive hit. I used to work for [ratings body] BARB and knock on people's doors and this was the rule of thumb.

"However, I'm in the no camp. So regardless of whether it would be a hit, I'm voting a no for myself on that show, so that's never going to happen."

He added: "And that's the end of that. Now all the people waiting outside can go and have a cup of tea somewhere."

Evans is just six years younger than Clarkson and is a self-confessed car fanatic. He's thought to have spent millions on vintage cars in the past.

However, when the rumours first emerged that he would be replacing Clarkson as the host, this immediately divided fans of the show on Twitter.

Adam Richards posted: "If they replace @JeremyClarkson with Chris Evans I shall never watch #TopGear ever again!@BBC you are a joke for ruining the best show on tv."

Whilst Catherine Arthur added: "Hearing rumours about Chris Evans replaying #JeremyClarkson on #TopGear, disappointed they don't mean the American :U (sic)"

Weirdly, Evans has insisted on re-tweeting some of the negative posts this morning, around the same time as he denied the rumours to reporters.
