The 28-year-old, who donned a voluminous white gown as she performed much-loved songs from the film including Climb Ev’ry Mountain and Edelweiss, had a long chat with the veteran actress to discuss her ideas for the event.

I said, ‘Just have a good time and enjoy it! Go for it!’

“It was to make sure I wasn’t in any way unhappy or upset that she was doing this,” Dame Julie explained. “And of course I wasn’t. I said, ‘Just have a good time and enjoy it! Go for it!’

“She said she wanted to do it as a tribute to me and she was singing everything in my key to which I said, ‘Why? It’s so high!’ And she said, ‘Because I wanted to honour you.’”

Luckily for Gaga, Dame Julie, who made a surprise appearance on stage to join her following the set, was impressed.

The 79-year-old, who played nun Maria opposite Christopher Plummer in the five-times Academy Award winning film, which was being celebrated to mark its 50th anniversary, added: “It was lovely! I was very busy at that time concentrating on her because I felt I had to get to her and tell her how great it was.

“It’s only by seeing a little clip of it afterwards that I realised how lovely that was. And I must say the audience was amazingly kind and loving and welcoming too.”
