It would seem BBC Radio 2 presenter Chris Evans isn't keen on taking Clarkson's place on the BBC car show and has tweeted fans.

I can categorically say I am not and will NEVER be running for office

The 48-year-old car enthusiast told fans: "Re @SkyNews Top Gear debate. I can categorically say I am not and will NEVER be running for office. Pls discount my candidacy."

Chris is famed for his love of motor vehicles and splashed out more than £2 million on a stunning Ferrari convertible last September alone.

And in May 2010 he purchased a 1963 Ferrari 250GTO for £12,000,000 - one of only 36 250 GTOs ever built.

Chris' announcement about not joining the show comes just 12 hours after it was revealed Jeremy Clarkson has been suspended from Top Gear.

Yesteday it was announced that the controversial presenter was suspended by the corporation "following a fracas" with a producer.

While Clarkson has yet to comment on the disclosure, a legion of his fans have taken to the internet to start a petition called 'BBC: Bring back Clarkson'.

The petition, started by a member on Change.org called Guido Fawkes almost three hours ago, states: "We the undersigned petition the BBC to reinstate Jeremy Clarkson. Freedom to fracas. #BringBackClarkson"

The planned instalment of Top Gear will not be broadcast this Sunday, a spokeswoman for the BBC has confirmed.

The spokeswoman said: "Following a fracas with a BBC producer, Jeremy Clarkson has been suspended pending an investigation.

"No one else has been suspended. Top Gear will not be broadcast this Sunday. The BBC will be making no further comment at this time."

Former Formula One driver Eddie Irvine is tipped to replace Jeremy, as told by Betfair Sportsbook, with odds of 5/1. Vicki Butler Henderson is coming in at a close second with odds of 6/1.
