However the hunky actor, who branded the previous rumours "conjecture", is now said to be "committed" to the project alongside his co-star Dakota Johnson.

A source told the Daily Mirror: "It's quite the opposite and they (Jamie and Dakota) are both committed to the project because of the benefits to the family."

The 32-year-old plays S&M-loving billionaire Christian Grey in the racy flick, based on the best-selling novels by E L James.

An insider also informed The Sunday Times: "Jamie has made it known that doubts could be in place if Sam Taylor-Johnson [director] exits, but it's just a ploy designed to put pressure on James and push her to loosen her grip.

"The truth is that Jamie plans to do all three, and very much with the backing of his family."

Meanwhile, Sam recently hinted that the Irish star had contractually signed up for three movies, after opening up about the actor who was originally chosen to play the businessman.

She said: "Charlie [Hunnam] and I were working really well together. But signing up for one film is very different from signing up for a trilogy.

"As the process got bigger, I started to sense his fear."

The filmmaker, believed to have also signed a contract tying her to a planned trilogy, previously admitted her relationship with the novelist was "difficult".

She said: "We definitely fought - but they were creative fights and we would resolve them.

"We would have proper on-set barneys, and I'm not confrontational, but it was about finding a way between the two of us, satisfying her vision of what she'd written as well as my need to visualise this person on screen. We got there."

A spokesman for Jamie told the Daily Express Online: "Jamie is delighted that the film is breaking box office records worldwide and whilst the studio has not made any formal announcements about sequels, he is looking forward to making the next film."
