Harrison Ford is set to reprise his lead role as Rick Deckard in the dystopian sci-fi film, according to reports.

However, director Ridley Scott is said to be planning to hand the reins over to Canadian director Denis Villeneuve.

The sequel has been written by Hampton Fancher, who co-wrote the original screenplay, and Michael Green.

According to MTV, Ridley said in an interview last November that Harrison had said the script was "the best thing I’ve ever read".

The first Blade Runner film was released in the early Eighties and depicts a rather dark Los Angeles in 2019.

The sequel will be set several decades later, but that is all that's been revealed about the plot so far.

Joining Ridley as co-producers will be Alcon Entertainment's Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson.

The announcement follows a string of reprisals for Eighties sci-fi film and TV shows, and also comes as Harrison resurrected his role as Han Solo in the new Star Wars film which is due to be released in December.
