The young actress is said to be a huge fan of the hit ITV period drama and hopes a part will seal her status in Tinseltown.

According to US sources Cressida, who was Prince Harry’s girlfriend until they split up last April, recently met Downton creator Julian Fellowes to discuss a potential role.

An insider told dailystar.co.uk: "Cressida is trying to break into Hollywood and knows a Downton role would do wonders for her profile, not only in the UK but also the US.

Tulip Fever, based on the 1999 novel by Deborah Moggach and set in 17th-century Amsterdam, was filmed last summer and will be released this year.

Although Cressida’s part in the movie is a relatively small one – she plays Mrs Steen, a merchant’s society wife – it has come with a seal of approval from Harvey Weinstein.

The legendary film producer said of her performance: "People will see what a fantastic actress she is… It will be the first of many roles for her."
