Speaking at the Taken 3 press conference in Dubai, Liam was asked a question about the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris last week.

The 62-year-old actor linked the event with gun violence in the US.

He said: "There are too many f***ing guns out there, especially in America.

"I think the population is, like, 320 million? There are over 300 million guns. Privately owned, in America. I think it’s a f***ing disgrace. Every week now we’re picking up a newspaper and seeing, ‘Yet another few kids have been killed in schools.'"

One might be forgiven for believing there is a link between violence in movies and reality, but Liam believes the opposite.

Speaking again, the Washington Post reports Liam said: "A character like Bryan Mills going out with guns and taking revenge: it’s fantasy. It’s in the movies, you know?

"I think it can give people a great release from stresses in life and all the rest of it, you know what I mean? It doesn’t mean they’re all going to go out and go, ‘Yeah, let’s get a gun!'"

There was mixed support on Twitter with one man saying: "Americans need to wake up and stop supporting Ahol..e like Liam Neeson whom make millions off us."

Another added: "#LiamNeeson makes his Hollyweird living using guns in movies & has the hypocrisy to say America has 'too many f***ing guns... #LiberalLogic"

User Heidi Harris was particularly annoyed by his comments, saying: "America has too many f****** guns’ says Taken star Liam Neeson. (actually we have too many ACTORS)"
