Only 241 of the loveable animals have been registered this year which has placed into it the "danger zone" according to the Kennel Club.

The club, who oversee registrations of the pedigree dog, said if it's numbers do not reach 300 then it will be entered on their "vulnerable native breeds list".

Speaking to The Telegraph, leading corgi breeder Diana King said: “We have lost a lot of our big kennels, a lot have just given up.

“A lot of the breeders are now just hobbyists even though we still have a terrific demand for puppies, but we can’t fulfil it.”

It has been claimed that the fall in the number of corgis is due to a Labour ban on tail docking.

She explained the many breeders feel legislation has impacted the look of the docked tail and has causing them to pull out of the business.

Caroline Kisko, the Kennel Club Secretary, told The Telegraph: "Small dogs are becoming much more popular.

“Whilst in some cases this is because they may be a better fit for particular lifestyles, it is also because people are buying on impulse and going for the most obvious or fashionable choices.”

The Queen has kept more than 30 corgis since she was given Dookie, his first one by her father King George VI in 1933.
