King Charles takes on 200 roles from late Queen - including one held by Meghan

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had to relinquish their royal patronages when they quit as working members of the Firm.

has been assigned over 200 new patronages thanks to a reshuffling of duties following the death of Queen Elizabeth back in September 2022.

He may have become King over 18 months ago, however, the review of charitable roles held by the Royal Family has only just been completed.

One of the most notable new positions for His Majesty is the patronage of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), a role once held by .

She and Prince Harry had many patronages when they were working royals, but when they stepped down in 2020 their patronages reverted back to the late Queen to hand out again.

Giving this particular patronage to the King is being considered a smart move, as it may have seemed inflammatory had it been given to Prince William and Princess Kate.

In March 2020 the Duchess of Sussex met with representatives of the ACU for her penultimate royal engagement at Buckingham Palace, with biographer Omid Scobie also present at the event.

He later revealed that she had whispered to him: "It didn't have to be this way."

Queen Camilla has also been granted several new roles in the reshuffle, including becoming President of the Sandringham Women's Institute.

Over 1,000 organisations with royal links have been involved in the reassignment, with 20 percent of those set to lose a royal patron due to the lack of working royals available - but they will be able to keep the word 'royal' in any titles they have.

At the time of her death the late Queen Elizabeth was still patron of 492 organisations, while at the time Charles held 441 and Camilla 100.

Now the King and Queen have been boosted to 669 and 115 respectively, with new patronages for other members of the Royal Family set to be announced in due course.

The King is also taking over the role of patron of the Royal British Legion, the Royal Commonwealth Society and Samaritans, while Camilla will take on the patronage of the Royal Academy of Dance.
