RUNAWAY immigration must be stopped to help solve Britain’s housing shortage, Ukip’s deputy chairman said yesterday.

Suzanne Evans said controlling the number of migrants in the UK would relieve pressure on services and ensure there is “countryside left for ourselves and others to enjoy”.

Ukip’s manifesto chief also accused the Tories of showing more “hatred for the countryside” than Labour as she unveiled the eurosceptic party’s housing plans.

Ukip has pledged to bring back into use up to 300,000 empty homes and protect greenbelt land by giving incentives to developers to build on brownfield sites.

At a press conference in Westminster, Ms Evans warned: “Net immigration is now at an all-time high. If we want to have any countryside left for ourselves and others to enjoy, we have to stop uncontrolled immigration and relieve the pressure on demand for housing, schools, healthcare services, transport, policing and the benefits system.”
