The 51-year-old journalist apologised for his “croaky voice” but looked well after he was discharged from hospital last month.

He was introduced on BBC One’s News At Six programme by colleague Sophie Raworth.

She said: “I’m very pleased to say we are joined by our political editor Nick Robinson who is back at work after surgery.”

She then warned viewers that his voice “sounds a bit different” at the moment.

Robinson’s first job was to give his assessment of Labour’s Manifesto launched yesterday.

It was revealed in February that Robinson had been diagnosed with a rare bronchial carcinoid tumour and that he was to undergo surgery to have it removed.

Located in the larger tubes of his lungs, they are usually slow-growing.

Last night he tweeted: “Good to be back on air. Don’t worry about the voice. It doesn’t hurt & I’m not risking my recovery. I’m listening to doctors & speech therapist.”
