The QPR captain tweeted that he thinks the youth are "more trusting of Savile" than the Liberal Democrats leader, and that the dead paedophile would "get more votes" if he were to stand in the election.

He finished off the bizarre outburst with the hashtags #clegg and #t**t.

Barton, who recently returned to the pitch after a three-week suspension, also branded Labour leader Ed Miliband "so awkward" and said he is "not sure" if he trusts David Cameron.

In an unexpected turn the footballer revealed his support for the Green Party's Natalie Bennett, who he said was "talking sense" during the ITV debate.

But overall, he was not impressed, tweeting: "For the first time in my life I'm considering not voting.

"I just don't trust anyone anymore. Why has it come to this?"

Express.co.uk readers voted Ukip leader Nigel Farage top with 65 per cent of the vote - compared to just 15pc for David Cameron and 7pc for Ed Miliband,

Barton has been in trouble for his Twitter antics before.

He was summoned by the French Football Federation’s ethics committee for calling Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva an “overweight ladyboy” in April 2013.

Barton had written a series of Twitter messages in which he went as far as questioning whether Silva was “pre-op or post-op”.
