The unidentified lady is said to be a Ukip member, but Buckingham Palace refused to comment

The image of a woman - who looks alarmingly similar to Her Majesty - canvassing for Nigel Farage’s party in Bromley, south-east London, has led to frantic speculation online.

The image shows the unidentified lady – said to be a Ukip member - handing out Union Jack flags on Bromley High Street.

Her silver perm, earrings and pursed lips bear an uncanny resembled to Britain's head of state.

The photo has triggered a lively response on social media.

One user said: “I've been looking at this for about a day, and I've come to the conclusion that this just can't not be the Queen”.

Another, referencing Ukip's euroscepticism, joked: “You'd think with her German heritage she'd be pretty pro-Europe as well.”

A Ukip spokesperson joked the photo proved the party was supported by all parts of society

After 60+ years on throne, she knows what's best for UK. Sensible woman

Ukip's Guildford branch

The party's local branch in Guildford tweeted its approval, writing: “After 60+ years on throne, she knows what's best for UK. Sensible woman.”

A spokesman for Ukip said: "We are now recognised as the largest party amongst the working class, now it seems we are also supported at the very peak."

Buckingham Palace refused to comment.

As head of state, the Queen has to remain politically neutral and is unable to vote or stand for election, with similar rules applying to other members of the Royal Family.

The law relating to elections does not specifically bar her from voting in a general election or local election, but it would be considered unconstitutional for her to do so.

However, that has not stopped political commentators speculating about her political persuasion.

In a book by Professor Pilmott, it is claimed the Queen is “a bit of a lefty” who tried to put the brakes on former Tory PM Margaret Thatcher’s policies in the latter years of her premiership.

David Cameron met the real Queen this morning to inform her of the dissolution of parliament, signalling the start of the General Election campaign proper.
