DAVID CAMERON is facing “mission impossible” in his drive to reform the EU, the European Council President Donald Tusk said yesterday.

Donald Tusk, left, warned David Cameron that EU reform is 'mission impossible'

His warning was being seen as a major blow to the Prime Minister’s plan to win a new EU deal for the UK and hold an in-out referendum by the end of 2017.

Mr Cameron wants the EU’s Lisbon Treaty revised to end the aim of “ever-closer union”.

But Mr Tusk said: “My intuition is that treaty change is close to mission impossible.

"We need unanimity between 28 member states.”

Ukip leader Nigel Farage said Mr Tusk’s remarks showed Mr Cameron’s plan was bound to fail.

He said: “David Cameron must come clean with the British people and tell them honestly that EU treaty negotiation is not going to happen as the EU leaders have made it clear that they will not have it.”
