Ed Miliband's idea for a new law came under attack

The Labour leader’s idea came amid a row over whether debates will happen ahead of the poll.

Downing Street has told broadcasters David Cameron will only take part in one of two planned TV debates with leaders of Labour, Lib Dem, Ukip, Greens and Scottish and Welsh nationalists.

He also rejected a TV debate with Mr Miliband. Labour said it would act to ensure debates feature in all general elections.

The rules would be similar to party political broadcasts.

However, ex-Scottish Nationalist Party leader Alex Salmond said: “What do you do when David Cameron doesn’t turn up? Shall we stick him in the clink?”
