The Labour leader was accused of being "awkward" and "not comfortable" after he was pictured today giving money to a beggar in the street.

Shots seemed to show the 44-year-old avoiding eye contact with the woman as he dropped change into a paper cup as she sat on the pavement.

The cringe-worthy pictures were taken as the opposition leader visited Manchester for a meeting of the area's Labour leaders.

Twitter user Asa Bennett tweeted: "Ed Miliband tries not to look awkward as he gives money to a begging woman in Manchester".

He then added: "Wow. Miliband seriously does not look comfortable…".

During a speech in July Mr Miliband addressed the embarrassing bacon sandwich shots.

He said if voters wanted a politician whose main focus was a good photo opportunity they should opt for someone else and referred to himself as a Nick Park animation.

He said: "I am not from central casting. You can find people who are more square-jawed, more chiselled, look less like Wallace.

"You could probably even find people who look better eating a bacon sandwich.

"If you want the politician from central casting, it's just not me, it's the other guy.

"If you want a politician who thinks that a good photo is the most important thing, then don't vote for me."
