Steve Jenkins and Derek Walter adopted Esther when she was 4lb, thinking she would grow to around five stone.

But they were tricked and Esther, thought to be a commercial pig, is now 670lb – heavier than an adult female polar bear.

The two-year-old beast, who is  toilet trained, lives in Steve and Derek’s house, along with two dogs and a cat and eats more than £30 worth of vegan food a week.

And the huge hog has become an internet sensation, with more than 230,000 people following the Esther The Wonder Pig page on Facebook.

Derek and Steve, from Ontario, Canada, provide daily updates on the pig’s exploits and sell calendars, postcards and mugs featuring the gentle giant.

We just adapted and loved her more. What else could we do?

Esther is now almost 10 times her expected size, but still enjoys home comforts – she sleeps beside the couple’s bed on a mattress.

Her diet is not bad, either: rolled oats, barley and corn, with lashings of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Steve, who works in the property industry, said: “We lived in denial for a long time. Friends would say ‘She’s getting bigger’ and Derek and I would say ‘No she’s not’.

“But soon she was starting to steal things off the kitchen counters, the couch became smaller and, of course, there was the weight gain.

“We just adapted and loved her more. What else could we do?”
