As the UK slept, Australians were treated to the first solar eclipse of 2014.

The eclipse which showed a partial covering of the sun left a red and yellow hue surrounding the moon.

This particular eclipse was a rare event and was completed in a matter of minutes.

The Sun was 95 per cent eclipsed by the Moon as it flew by.

This eclipse is one of two solar and four lunar that we are set to expect this year.

2014 still has another total lunar eclipse and a good partial solar in October, both visible from North America only.

UK stargazers will be able to view the eclipses via live streams on the NASA and Space websites.
