Blackpool Zoo celebrates as rare baby orangutan born there in June is named Jarang
The winning name, Jarang, means "rare" in the Malay language - and the little mite, born in June, really is a rare treat.
Baby Jarang is the first Bornean orangutan to be born at Blackpool Zoo in over 20 years – and he was certainly worth the wait.
The little fella certainly seems very happy to be here, appearing to smile and give a celebratory wave of his tiny fists as he gazes up at his proud mum Jingga.
The Bornean orangutan is critically endangered, and the zoo’s online naming competition for the new arrival raised almost £2,000 for the Orangutan Foundation, which works tirelessly to save the animals by protecting their habitats.

Photographer Gary Cox, 53, from Manchester, said: “Baby Jarang was very close to his mum Jingga by the viewing glass at the orangutan enclosure. I’m sure she was showing him off to us.
“Jingga does appear to want the viewing public to see her baby.
“Other animals tend to keep their young away from prying eyes but Jingga looks extremely proud and makes sure everyone can see her little pride and joy.”
