1915 – Five men are tragically drowned in the River Tees at Croft Spa near Darlington after the motor car they are travelling in crashes through a fence 

1940 – Holidays for staff working at one of Britain’s ‘Big Five’ banks are to be cut from six weeks to three, with management saying ‘no one expects full holiday in wartime’

1965 – Former Sunday school teacher Jean Bryden, 23, celebrates with bacon and eggs after being released from prison having served 10 months for her part in a Barcelona murder 

1990 – Violence erupts across the country as demonstrators turn out in force to protest over the poll tax in what’s been called a ‘new Peasants’ Revolt’

2005 – Legendary Radio 1 rock DJ Tommy Vance, famed for his gravel throated drawl, dies at the age of 63 following a stroke 

2010 – Carey Mulligan, star of hit Brit film An Education, is gearing up for the Oscars ceremony having been nominated for Best Actress but admits it’s ‘scary’
