EXPANSION of top iris scanning technology could be hitting more Samsung smartphones in the coming months.
Samsung's iris scanner could soon be coming to more devices
Samsung could be about to shake up your smartphone with some exciting new technology.
One of the company’s top executives has revealed that Samsung is planning to introduce the iris-scanning technology seen in the Galaxy Note 7 into a wider number of mid-end phones sooner than expected.
This follows the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 this week, which uses lets users unlock the device simply by looking at the camera, without needing to ever enter a PIN number or password.
DJ Koh, president of Samsung's mobile division, said in a press conference at the company’s recent Unpacked event in New York: "We've invested over three years in the development of iris scanning technology…in theory, out of all the biometric security systems, iris scanning is the most secure."
"We have a road map for the technology and moving accordingly," he added, according to ZDNet.
"Through continued cost cutting, iris scanning can trickle down to mid-end models," he added. "There is a view that Android is weak in security compared to its competitor and we want to expand software security that can overcome this image."
The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will go on sale next month
Koh also hinted that iris scanning could also be expanded to perform other functions on the company’s future devices.
He said, ”We did not put iris scanning in the flagship model just to do 'unlock'. In the long run, through third parties and API, we want to connect it with apps.”
“For mobile banking, we are thinking of applying iris scanning for large transactions, and are already talking with banks in some countries.”
The Galaxy Note 7 is Samsung's biggest device to date
Set to launch in the UK on September 2nd, the Galaxy Note 7 is Samsung’s most advanced handset to date.
The flagship Samsung device packs a beautiful dual-curved 5.7inch Quad-HD Super AMOLED display, along with a 12MP Dual Pixel rear camera and a next-generation S Pen stylus which lets you jot down notes on the screen – even when it is switched off.
Although there’s no information on price tag just yet, rumours have suggested the device could cost as much as £750.
