Speaking during the Code Media conference in California, the social media site's head of product, Chris Cox, confirmed they were ready to fully engage with the new technology.

“I mean, virtual reality is pretty cool. We’re working on apps for VR,” Cox told website Re/code.

“You realize, when you’re in it, that you’re looking at the future, and it’s going to be awesome. When you’re in Facebook, you’re just sending around these bits of experience — a photo, a video, a thought,” before he added that with VR, you could be “sending a fuller picture.”

Cox admitted that it would be a while before the Oculus Rift was common place but revealed that Facebook were planning for all account holders to use its VR apps.

Facebook: The federation of platforms ?

After Facebook acquired Oculus VR last year in a deal worth $2billion, CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained the purchase was linked to the long-term strategy for social networking.

“At this point we feel we're in a position where we can start focusing on what platforms will come next to enable even more useful, entertaining and personal experiences,” he wrote in a status update in March.

He later told analysts: “With Oculus, it's that they're the clear leader in something that has the potential to be the next important, or one of the next most important computing platforms.
