'I can't afford to use a tumble dryer - but I found a solution to dry my towels quickly'

A content creator who threw in the towel when her tumble dryer became too expensive to use has shared a cheaper alternative for drying laundry.

Low temperatures coupled with high humidity levels can present a challenge to anyone tackling vast amounts of laundry during winter.

Towels present a unique challenge in households plagued with humidity due to their thickness, which causes them to harbour moisture.

Failure to control the dampness can in turn contribute to the development of mould and further complications - but one hack could prevent this.

The self-proclaimed “Duchess of Thrift" took to TikTok to discuss the simple swap she made after tumble-drying was no longer an option due to financial constraints.

Swapping regular thick towels for microfiber towels proved a godsend for both her schedule and finances during the winter, she explained.

“By switching in winter to these microfibre towels, I will save myself loads of money on tumble drying and I’ll also save myself from them having that horrible damp smell,” the content creator told her followers.

This improvement can be explained by the fact that microber has an increased surface area, compared to towels made with generic fabric.

This results in the faster absorption of moisture and the fabric can hold more water than almost any other type of cloth.

Tumble-dryers

“The reason these are great in winter - because they’re microfibre, they’re like fleece, and it dries incredibly quickly," added the content creator.

“If you put them in the tumble dryer, they’ll be dry in 10 minutes. I try to avoid using my tumble dryer because it guzzles electricity.

“And although the prices have dropped a little bit, it’s still over double the price it was before lockdown.

“It’s still insanely expensive and I want to keep my energy bills down, so these dry really, really quickly in the tumble dryer.”

The simple swap, which has previously been endorsed by Mrs Hinch fans, could prove helpful as Britons brave the annual hike in energy bills.

Other useful investments discussed on a Facebook group shared by the members include a heated airer, condenser tumble dryers and a laundry maid.
