Prince Charles: A look back at the Investiture of the Prince of Wales on 50th Anniversary
PRINCE CHARLES, the Prince of Wales, attended a royal reception at Buckingham Palace this afternoon to mark 50 years since his Investiture. Take a look back at pictures of the historic day in 1969.
Queen Elizabeth II hosted a reception today to mark the 50th anniversary of the Investiture of the Prince of Wales.
Prince Charles, 70, was joined by his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall and his two sons Prince William and Prince Harry along with their wives Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle for the Buckingham Palace event in his honour.
The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s eldest son Charles was created the Prince of Wales at the age of nine, on July 26 1958, and was formally invested with the title at Caernarfon Castle on July 1 1969.
Pictures from the day show the Queen placing the coronet on the head of her kneeling son and fastening the mantle around his shoulders.
Prince Charles, dressed in his investiture regalia and holding a sceptre walked the grounds of the Welsh castle much to the delight of royal well-wishers before embarking on a royal carriage procession with his mother.
Her Majesty wore a cream coat dress with a typically 1960s style round-neck collar and a coordinating beaded hat.
His father Prince Phillip looked suitably dressed for the occasion in his military dress uniform.
Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, wore a bright yellow dress with a several strings of pearls, white gloves and a matching fluffy hat for her grandson's investiture.
Princess Anne, his sister, was also in attendance in a blue coat dress and hat along with the Queen’s sister Princess Margaret and her then husband Lord Snowdon.
