Hayfever affects one in five Britons

More than 10million Britons suffer from hayfever, a common allergic reaction to pollen, which causes symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes and a runny nose.

The combination of warmer days, leafy trees and light winds means that pollen levels are on the rise, and experts have predicted a particularly intense pollen season this year thanks to a spring heatwave.

People suffering from hayfever often confuse their symptoms with a cold and treat them inappropriately.

Angela Chambers, a Boots UK pharmacist, advises to avoid symptoms this summer by preparing early.

"Many people with hayfever wait until their symptoms strike before they take action, but the earlier you prepare, the better."

Top five tips from Boots UK to help you nip hayfever in the bud

1. Speak to your pharmacist now - they can determine the right treatment for your personal symptoms so you can put an effective routine in place before the pollen count rises

2. Use nasal sprays throughout the season for them to work effectively, not just when your nose starts twitching (Boots Pharmaceuticals Allergy Barrier Nasal Spray, £8.99)

3. Start a protection routine now – use eye drops that can be used ahead of time to reduce symptoms (Otrivine Antistin Eye Drops, £5.50)

4. Include sunglasses in your prevention plans – they act as physical guard against pollen exposure around the sensitive eye area and are an easy way to stay protected on the school run or commute

5. Keep your asthma in check – around 80% of people with asthma are also affected by hayfever.

Hayfever can aggravate asthma so it is important to take steps to manage symptoms throughout the warmer months
