Research into pomegranates has shown they have more health benefits than any other fruit

An analysis of the glut of global interest in the “superfruit” found it fights Type 2 diabetes and bowel and prostate cancers.

Researchers in Oxford looked at clinical trials over a year and findings have reignited interest in the effect of superfruits – especially pomegranates.

Bio-medical researcher with consultancy ClickTell Sepe Sehati said: “When we look at the time and effort invested in studies worldwide, pomegranate is the main focus.

“In a year, 194 studies have been published, more than any other fruit.

“It’s evidence fruit juices and extracts have an impact on wellbeing.”

British experts previously linked pomegranate to the dispersal of waistline fat, lowered stress, arterial health and virility.

The accepted wisdom is that a superfruit is not a cure-all but fruits can have beneficial health effects

Latest studies show a promising impact on the management of the body’s glycaemic index – a key issue in Type 2 diabetes.

There is also a link between pomegranate and a slowing down in the spread of prostate and bowel cancers.

And it has been shown to improve athletic performance.

Type 2 diabetes affects more than three million Britons and is set to rise to five million by 2025.

Dr Sehati said: “The accepted wisdom is that a superfruit is not a cure-all but fruits can have beneficial health effects.

“Pomegranates are an ancient fruit and have been thought to have health-giving properties for millennia.

"That study after study confirms this suggests the superfruit debate is not over.”

Other fruits and vegetables getting worldwide attention are blueberries, cranberries, avocados, beetroot, mangosteen, acai berries, kiwi fruit, goji berries and noni fruit.
