Women more likely to drink due to stress

WOMEN are more likely than men to reach for a stiff drink after a stressful day, according to a study out yesterday.

Experts found they have a stronger stress-induced alcohol craving than men.

The study by psychologists at the University of California said there was a well-established link between psychological stress and alcohol use.

Research team leader Dr Lara Ray said: “Females reported greater craving and greater anxiety under stress than men, suggesting that females were more sensitive to stress than males.

“Stress-induced craving and anxiety were also linked in females but not in males.”

Such needs also led to an increase in negative mood for women more so than for men, the findings reported in science journal Addictive Behaviours found.
