Sadiq Khan dubbed a ‘modern-day highwayman’ who is ‘fleecing’ drivers over car tax fees

Sadiq Khan's new motoring charges have been slammed by Conservative MP Lee Anderson. Drivers will face new ULEZ charges this August, and fees will soon be payable to use the popular Blackwall Tunnel.

Christopher Hope says Tories will not challenge ULEZ expansion

is a “thief” who is “fleecing” motorists and must be stopped, according to a Tory MP. It comes as a range of new daily car tax fees are set to hit .

Drivers as far as Harrow and Bromley will be slapped with new £12.50 per day (ULEZ) fees at the end of the month.

Meanwhile, it has emerged Transport for London (TfL) will soon issue fees to motorists crossing the Blackwall Tunnel, a key artery in the east end of the city.

Conservative MP Lee Anderson has slammed the new proposals and explained it was vital Londoner's ditch Khan in next year’s Mayoral electrons.

The former Labour politician even compared Khan to notorious robber Dick Turpin and branded the London mayor as a “modern-day highwayman”.

Speaking to GB News, Anderson said: “It’s robbery. The man is perceived as a thief and who can disagree with that? We’ve got the ULEZ expansion and now we’ve got this nonsense.

“He’s like a modern-day highwayman. He’s like Dick Turpin. He’s out robbing people on the highway. The poor old motorists have enough to attend with in this country with the cost of fuel and the cost of car insurance.

“Roll on next year we need to get this man gone.”

Angry drivers took to social media to slam the new Blackwall Tunnel charges which will be introduced in 2025.

The fees are being brought in to help pay for works to the new Silvertown tunnel which will connect to the Greenwich Peninsula.

However, it comes at a time of added costs for road users with the new ULEZ expansion set to cost drivers around £375 per month if they use their vehicles every day.

It appears motoring schemes could become a real election issue with Sir Keir Starmer coming out publicly against ULEZ.

A consultation by TfL found that 59 percent of residents did not support an expansion to Outer London boroughs.

Meanwhile, Labour missed out on securing Boris Johnson’s former seat in Uxbridge after local Conservative associations rallied against the proposal.

Susan Hall, the Tories' Mayoral candidate, has pledged to axe the scheme if she is elected next May.

Anderson added: “The way we stop the expansion and the charges of the Blackwall Tunnel and any other air brain schemes he’s got is by getting rid of the man next year.

“That's what I want to do. I want to focus on campaigning to get Susan in next year.

“If we do that, if we’re successful then all this rubbish Khan is coming out with stops straight away. Let’s get rid of the man and not just the policy.

“The people of London have to make a choice now. You continue with this man who’s thieving of you, stealing money out of your pocket, fleecing people.

“Or you can put a candidate in who has told the world that she will scrap the ULEZ expansion.”

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: “The introduction of a toll on the Blackwall tunnel was confirmed by Boris Johnson when he was the Mayor in 2012.

“Nine out of ten cars seen driving in outer London on an average day are already ULEZ compliant and their drivers will not have to pay the charge.

"For drivers of the most polluting vehicles, Sadiq has announced TfL is making major changes to the scrappage scheme from next Monday, to make every Londoner with a non-compliant car eligible for a £2,000 grant to replace their car- as well as doubling the grants for wheelchair accessible vehicles to £10,000 and increasing the scrappage payments and retrofit grants for vans.”
