New 'car free' day will see your vehicle BANNED - Will you be affected?
A NEW car-free initiative aims to remove cars from the roads across 50 roads in London to reduce air pollution.
World Car Free Day will ban vehicles across 50 roads in the Capital.
Motorists are being urged to ditch their vehicles across multiple Boroughs to tackle air pollution and encourage a great sense of community.
The Mayor and Transport for London hope to open up spaces to the community by supporting London Play, which is a children's charity.
One of the charities main aims is to transform streets into safe places for children to play and be safe.
The idea behind 'play streets' is to see roads regularly shut to traffic for a few hours a week or month.
Fiona Sutherland, deputy director at London Play, hopes the initiative will hopefully also help “build friendships and stronger communities”.
She said: “Streets make up 80 per cent of London’s public space, a valuable community resource which has largely been given up for the sole use of cars, parked or moving.
“We hope Car Free Day will inspire more people to start regular play sessions on their streets.”
Poor air quality has a devastating affect across the country eery year.
Annually air pollution is thought to contribute to the premature deaths of 40,000 people and emissions from cars and vans is estimated to cost £6 billion each year.
“I’m delighted that Londoners will be able to enjoy more than 40 streets without traffic noise and exhaust fumes on World Car Free Day,” Heidi Alexander, Deputy Mayor for Transport said.
“Our support for London Play will transform neighbourhoods for families and offer a valuable opportunity to inspire long-term change, helping to build on our work to reduce reliance on cars and clean up the capital’s dangerously polluted air.
