The broadcaster could make an upfront payment of about £200million rising to an estimated £600million.

It recently announced the £355million acquisition of Talpa Media from Big Brother creator John de Mol, whose shows also include The Voice.

ITV boss Adam Crozier said such deals would accelerate ambitions for a global business.

Ian Whittaker, a media analyst at broker Liberum, said: "Together with Talpa, it will give ITV a major status in the US, although it still seems there are several issues to be resolved."
