Luxury car market hits new record as demand from China soars

SOARING demand in China for luxury cars – including Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, Bentley and Rolls-Royce – has helped Britain’s automotive sector claim a record 11.2 per cent of UK exports.

Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show China is the single biggest foreign market for British cars with a five-fold increase since 2009 to 137,410 last year. 

Exports hit £26.2billion with almost 1.2million to over 100 countries, up 54.7 per cent on 2009. 

SMMT boss Mike Hawes said: “The desire for premium cars with a strong brand heritage has placed the UK in a prime position.”
