The Mr Kipling, Bisto and Oxo group enjoyed its highest quarterly market share for three years as it posted a £131million annual trading profit.

Jefferies analyst Martin Deboo said Tesco could be a key ingredient for Premier’s success: “With Premier already talking new Tesco boss Dave Lewis’s language of de-complexi?cation, the stage is set for the beginning of a beautiful relationship, if Premier plays its cards right.”

Premier chief executive Gavin Darby said: “I am extremely interested in supporting a retailer who wants to take 20-40 per cent of their product lines out because it will benefit the faster-selling lines and we typically have those.”

Premier shares rose 3½p to 40¼p.
