With its distinctive African grey parrot logo, it aims to replicate the success of budget airlines in Europe, with one-way tickets from $20 (£12.50), excluding taxes and charges.

Aim-listed Fastjet, with a market value of £60million, is a spin-off from Lonrho and its Fly540 airline operating in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana and Angola.

Easyjet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has acted as consultant. His easyGroup holds a 5 per cent stake in the firm, while Lonrho has 67 per cent.

Three new Airbus A319 jets are due to be delivered to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, but the fleet is set to grow to 40 by 2015.

By then it will carry 12million passengers a year and Fly540 will be phased out.
