Square Enix aims to be a player in China
JAPAN-BASED Square Enix, one of the world’s biggest entertainment and gaming groups, is hoping to crack the burgeoning Chinese market as it sets out to become the largest company in the sector.
Yoichi Wada, president and chief executive of Square Enix, told The Financial Sunday Express: “Growth (in China)
has been very significant in the past five years. We will be tying up with a Chinese company.” It could be through a joint venture, alliance or business alliance, Wada said, and would develop new products as well as selling existing ones.
Wada said: “We want to be the top player in a couple of years.” In April this year, Square Enix acquired Britain’s Eidos
for £84.3 million. Eidos publishes Tomb Raider, which features Lara Croft. India, Africa, the Middle East and South America are also in Wada’s sights.
He said the sector’s performance was “not bad” despite the recession.
