Chief executive Ken McMeikan said same-store sales had been flat in the six weeks to August 8 as workers “decided not to venture out in the rain during their lunchtime breaks”.

However the figures failed to dampen “very pleasing” first half results to 27 June showing pre-tax profits up 7.3 per cent to £16.5million on same-store sales up 1.5 per cent.

“We have a great value reputation,” said McMeikan.

He said the company’s new range of products including chicken fajita pasties and Belgian buns had proved popular.

Its first petrol forecourt store in Bury, Lancashire, had “performed well”.

It expects to open 40 new shops over the second half of the year.
